The number of times President Barack Obama has issued an official White House statement with the word “ridiculous” in the title in the 8 years he has been in the Oval Office: Zero.
Time after Election Day it took the Donald Trump transition team to issue an official federal government statement with the word “ridiculous” in the title: Three weeks.
The statement, from GreatAgain.gov, sounds more like a child’s tirade than the words coming out of the President of the United States: “This recount is just a way for Jill Stein, who received less than one percent of the vote overall and wasn’t even on the ballot in many states, to fill her coffers with money, most of which she will never even spend on this ridiculous recount… This is a scam by the Green Party for an election that has already been conceded, and the results of this election should be respected instead of being challenged and abused, which is exactly what Jill Stein is doing.”
Is it ridiculous for a presidential candidate to request a recount in 3 out of the 50 states? It’s a longshot, but it’s an official part of the process, provoked by concerns about hacking in the computer systems, and the narrow margin that Donald Trump had there. It’s not very unusual, and unlike the frequent closing off of entire streets and tunnels in Manhattan to allow the Trump family to move around at will, American taxpayers aren’t being forced to pay for it. Hundreds of thousands of Americans voluntarily gave money to enable the recount in Pennsylvania, Wisconsin, and Michigan.
It’s happened before. After the 2004 presidential election, the Green Party and Libertarian Party filed demands for recounts in the state of Ohio. You didn’t see Barack Obama screaming at people and throwing a fit back then. Donald Trump is incapable of following that example. He’s fuming.
We’ve seen this before, and it never looks pretty. This kind of outburst of rage from Donald Trump is all too common – so common that people have invented a new word to describe the phenomenon: Trumpertantrum. You understand what this word means, and the frightening behavior it refers to, as soon as you see it. A Trumpertantrum is a temper tantrum thrown by Donald Trump.
The terrible difference between a normal temper tantrum and a Trumpertantrum is that most of the time it’s just toddlers who throw tantrums. All they can do is scream and kick and hit the floor. Now that Donald Trump is Tantrum in Chief, it’s as if we have a toddler in the White House… with his fist on the nuclear button.
